April sees the start of the snowmelt, and there is almost no snow left in the plains. However, with an average temperature of 7°C until mid-month, thick coats may still be needed. Puddles from melting snow are common, so waterproof shoes are recommended. Towards the end of the month, temperatures finally rise, and Hokkaido's sightseeing gardens, such as Manabe Garden and Shichiku Garden, start their season one after another. May can have days approaching 20°C, allowing for outings in light clothing like long-sleeved T-shirts and spring coats. However, the minimum temperature is still 7°C, so always prepare an additional layer, such as a hoodie or a cardigan.

Surrounded by mountains, Obihiro has an inland climate with hot summers and cold winters. The temperature difference between day and night can exceed 20°C. Having a long-sleeved shirt or an outer layer is recommended throughout the year. From around June, daytime temperatures become warm enough to spend in short sleeves. July and August can see midsummer days with temperatures over 30°C, but the low humidity makes for a dry heat, perfect for enjoying camping or outdoor activities. Don’t forget a hat due to the strong sunlight. Coastal areas with frequent sea fog, however, tend to have cooler daytime temperatures. Layering clothing is the best way to adjust the body's temperature.

Autumn in Obihiro is short, with winter quickly approaching. The summer heat can linger for a while, but September is usually a cool and pleasant month, with an average temperature of 17°C. However, the cold weather comes early, and by late September signs of autumn leaves begin at Mikuni Pass and Lake Shikaribetsu. Jackets are fine, but lightweight outerwear like windbreakers are handy for foliage viewing. In October, the average temperature drops to around 10°C, and it's time for sweaters and coats. By November, the cold intensifies daily, with an average temperature of 4°C, similar to Tokyo's midwinter. Add accessories to thick coats or down jackets for thorough cold protection. Warming up in a moor hot spring bath is also recommended.

Obihiro has one of the highest amounts of sunlight in Japan. Even in winter, there are many clear days with a crisp, cloudless blue sky, a weather known as "Tokachi Bare" (Sunny Tokachi). However, temperatures are generally below freezing. Keep warm with a thick down jacket that covers up to your waist with a hood against snow, thermal innerwear, gloves, and earmuffs. The mornings and evenings are especially cold, with temperatures sometimes falling below -20°C. This area has relatively little snow, but snow boots with good anti-slip and cold protection are recommended. If you plan to visit the popular snow and ice event Shikaribetsu-ko Kotan, you will need proper protection against the cold. The cold begins to ease slightly from mid-March.
