Due to its location in the southern part of Hokkaido, it is relatively warm compared to other areas in the region. The snow melts early, and there is almost no snow by April. Still, the average temperature is around 8°C, similar to Tokyo in December. However, you still can't put away your winter coat. By the end of the month, as temperatures rise, the cherry blossom front reaches the area, and places like Goryokaku Park and Matsumae Castle are bustling with many flower viewers. In May, there are more warm days, and it may feel like spring during the day, but the average temperature is still around 13°C. It's still cold at night, so outerwear like spring coats or jackets is still necessary. Footwear such as sneakers or pumps is fine, but it's too early for barefoot sandals.

June in Hakodate is refreshingly cool with no rainy season, and the average temperature is 17°C. By the end of the month, as you start to feel the early summer heat, there are more days when you can get by in short sleeves. Leading into July, it's the season for Hakodate's famous hairy crab. Be sure to try it at the Hakodate Morning Market. July and August see average temperatures exceeding 20°C, making short-sleeved shirts and shorts comfortable for daytime sightseeing in the city. More days have been over 30°C recently, so don't forget to bring a parasol or hat. Although the chill in the early morning and late evening may not feel significant, don't underestimate the usefulness of thin cardigans or long-sleeved shirts. Still, they can be handy for preventing sunburn during midday, so it wouldn't hurt to bring them. As autumn approaches, it's safer to have a folding umbrella due to the increased likelihood of rain.

The arrival of autumn in Hakodate is slow. Even after September begins, you can still comfortably wear short sleeves during the day. However, on chilly mornings, evenings, or rainy days, a hoodie or cardigan becomes essential due to the drop in temperature. From late September, the weather starts to cool down, and by the time October rolls in, it shifts to autumn air. By mid-October, there are more days with minimum temperatures falling below 10°C, signaling the time for coats. You can enjoy splendid views of autumn leaves in the city at Kosetsuen (Miharashi Park). The first snow flurries begin in early November, hinting at winter approaching. Winter gear like thick coats, down jackets, and gloves would prove helpful. Thermal boots are also recommended.

Hakodate is considered relatively warm by Hokkaido standards, with less snow. Still, the average temperature in December is a solid 0°C, complete with snow accumulation. The annual "Hakodate Christmas Fantasy" is held in the Bay Area, and the night view from Mount Hakodate shines even brighter. Thermal innerwear, down jackets, and snow boots for your feet are a must. The summit and areas near the port are even colder, so adding winter accessories like gloves and earmuffs is crucial for complete cold protection.
On the other hand, it is very warm indoors thanks to heating, so outfits that are easy to remove are ideal. From the beginning of the year, the average temperature drops below freezing, marking the actual onset of winter. By March, the snow begins to melt, signaling the first signs of spring.
