Lake Kussharo

Dig in the sandy beach and you can instantly turn it into an open-air bath!

The largest caldera lake in Japan, Lake Kussharo is a scenic spot where tourist buses stop by. On the sandy beach by the lake shore, you can enjoy sunayu (literally “bathing in the sand”). Hot spring water comes out as soon as you dig in the sand, creating your own personal open-air bath. This is a great place where not only small children but even adults will enjoy digging and playing in the sand, returning to their childhood memories. There is also a campground, and in summer, after bathing in the lake, you can dig in the sand and enjoy the hot spring baths. In the winter, many people come to see the whooper swans resting their wings, making it an enjoyable tourist spot all year round.
