Nemuro City Shunkunitai Native Wild Bird Park Nature Center

You can get information about the nature of Shunkunitai, such as wild birds and blooming flowers.

Located at the base of the Nemuro Peninsula, Shunkunitai is an 8km long and 1.3km wide sand island that divides Nemuro Bay and Lake Furen. It is a unique place where the natural environment of the eastern part of Hokkaido, including tidal flats, grasslands, marshlands, and forests, is condensed into one place. A variety of wild birds, such as cranes, white-tailed sea eagles and small birds of the forest and grasslands, can be seen from the wooden observation path, and from May to October, the flowers of the marshland and grasslands, such as skunk cabbages and Japanese bush clover, bloom one after another. The surrounding Lake Furen is home to a variety of migratory birds throughout the year, including whooper swans and various species of ducks from October to November and March to April, shorebirds and plovers from April to May and July to September, and Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed sea eagles from November to February, making it truly a paradise for wild birds. Seasonal information on the wildlife of Shunkunitai and Lake Furen are available at the Nature Center.
