Otaru Canal and Gas Lamps

Immerse yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere of the canal at night with its flickering gas lights.

Reclaimed from a part of the waterway, the Otaru Canal walking path is a place of relaxation for citizens and tourists alike. Both sides of the canal are lined with historical stone warehouses and old buildings, most of which are now reconverted into cafes and restaurants. Along the walking path are installed as many as 63 old-fashioned gas lamps, which, at dusk, are lit up at the same time of the stone warehouses, creating a romantic atmosphere different from the daytime.
