Former National Railways Shihoro Line Concrete Arch Bridges

A group of railroad viaducts that look like ancient Roman ruins, left behind in the midst of nature.

National Route 273 runs north-south through the mountainous forest areas of Nukabira and Tokachi Mitsumata. Along this road, there are 60 old concrete arch bridges of various sizes, which were used as railroad viaducts on the Shihoro Line of the former Japanese National Railways. These bridges, which look like ancient Roman aqueducts, blend in beautifully with the natural beauty of the four seasons and have been selected as a Hokkaido Heritage site. The Taushubetsu River Bridge, where the entire bridge sinks into the dam formed Lake Nukabira depending on the seasonal changes in the water level, is especially popular for its magical atmosphere.
