Okhotsk Museum Esashi

Discover the life of the ancient people who were active on the Sea of Okhotsk.

Have you ever heard of the Okhotsk people? In the past, there were people who lived with the sea along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido. At the Okhotsk Museum Esashi, items excavated from the Menashidomari Ruins (nationally designated important cultural property) and reconstructed pit dwellings are on display to tell the story of Okhotsk culture. The museum also has a full-body specimen of the extinct mammal Desmostylus found in Esashii Town, fossils, and one of the largest orca skeletons in Japan at over 7 meters long. This is a place where you can learn about the nature and history of the Esashi region and the Okhotsk Sea coast through a variety of exhibits.
