The Sapporo Snow Festival

Beautiful winter art! One of the world's three greatest snow festivals

The Sapporo Snow Festival has been held for more than 70 years since 1950, when local students displayed six snow sculptures in Odori Park, and it has become Sapporo's world-class snow and ice festival. Held at three venues in Sapporo, including Odori Park, the festival attracts more than 2 million visitors from Japan and abroad each year. More than 100 snow sculptures of historical buildings from around the world, popular anime and video game characters, and the year's most talked-about celebrities line the Odori venue, stretching approximately 1.5 km from east to west. The colossal snow sculptures are the highlight of the Snow Festival! The snow sculptures stand as tall as five-story buildings, giving them a striking presence. The overwhelming power and delicate beauty of these sculptures is a spectacular sight you must see at least once in your lifetime. The contrast between the bright blue winter sky and the pure white snow statues is terrific, but the nighttime lighting is also something you should not miss. Don't miss the projection mapping, in which images are projected onto the illuminated snow sculptures as if they were screens! The spectacular production that unfolds one after another is a constant sensation. The Susukino venue, the largest entertainment center in Hokkaido, features an exhibition of ice sculptures themed around having fun with ice. Colorful neon lights shine on the transparent ice sculptures. At the Tsudome venue, a favorite attraction for families, the Tube Slider, a snow slide down a tube, is extremely popular. There are also many other snow play activities, such as the Snow Maze and Snowmobile, which are sure to be a big hit with children and adults alike.
