Sapporo Lilac Festival

Sapporo's spring comes with the bloom of lilacs

Lilac has been designated as the tree of Sapporo. Every year during its blooming season, the Sapporo Lilac Festival is held in the center of the city. In 1954, it originated in cultured people who had wanted a cultural gathering to hold during the season of the bright purple blossoms. Today, it has become an annual event that signifies that spring has come after a long winter of Hokkaido. Odori Park, the main venue of the festival, is loved by the locals as a relaxing place and is a must-visit destination for tourists. Here, about 400 lilac trees will bloom, and there will be a lot of fun programs, including displays and sales of lilacs, commemorative tree planting, sapling giveaways, and even stage performances. At the cafe terrace set up in the 6-chome venue, you can enjoy drinks, sweets and dishes made with Hokkaido's fresh produce while admiring lilacs swaying in the refreshing breeze under the blue sky. The Kawashimo Park venue is for those who want to take their time to appreciate the lilacs. Here, about 1,700 lilac trees of 200 varieties from around the world are planted, making it the largest lilac garden in Japan. Immerse yourself in the beautiful purple and the gentle fragrance wafting through the air.
