Goryokaku Tower

Attractive observatory with views of the historic Goryokaku and the city of Hakodate

The new tower (second generation), which opened on April 1, 2006, is 107 meters high and offers a star-shaped view of the ruins of Goryokaku, Japan's first Western-style castle, as well as a panoramic view of Hakodate and Mount Hakodate, and on a clear day, the Shimokita Peninsula and Tsugaru Peninsula (Aomori Prefecture) across the Tsugaru Strait. The "Goryokaku History Guided Tour," in which staff members provide easy-to-understand information about the history of Goryokaku and the Hakodate War at the observatory, is also popular.
