Obira Herring House
Renewal of facilities to allow visitors to better experience the herring houses of the prosperous period.
At the newly renovated tourist exchange center, you will be greeted by a large fishing flag that was actually used. In the museum, objects of herring hang from the ceiling, and objects resembling the mokko used for transportation are arranged, etc. In the exhibition room on the second floor, the tools of herring fishing at that time, when it was at the height of its prosperity, and materials that show life at that time are exhibited. There is a restaurant and a store selling souvenirs unique to Obira, and you can enjoy herring dishes and other seafood. Opposite the beach is the Nishin Culture and History Park, where there is a bronze statue of the explorer who was the godfather of Hokkaido, and a monument to the tanka poem he read in Obira.
