Shiokari Pass Hitome Senbonzakura

The many cherry blossoms that color the Shiokari Pass, the setting of the famous book, are beautiful.

Shiokari Pass is a well-known place as the setting for the novels Shiokari Pass and Hyoten (Freezing Point) by Ayako Miura. It has long been a famous cherry blossom viewing spot for those in the know. Every year from the beginning to the middle of May, about 1,600 Ezo yamazakura cherry trees bloom, turning the mountain pass a lovely light pink. During the cherry blossom viewing season, a special train service is operated, and the quiet pass becomes crowded with people. The rows of cherry trees along the side of the road leading from Shiokari Station to Minamioka Forest Park are also in full bloom at the same time, making for a beautiful sight.
