Kaminokunidate Remains - Remains of Katsuyamakan

Think back to Hokkaido's Warring States Period at one of the best mountain castles in southern Hokkaido.

Katsuyamakan is a mountain castle built in the late 15th century. Excavations have continued for more than 30 years at this historic site, which covers an area of about 350,000 square meters, and over 100,000 artifacts, including tools, buildings, wells, and the remains of bridges, have been found. The excavated items show how life in the mountain castle was like during the Middle Ages, and it is becoming clear that Ainu and Japanese people lived together here. The area around the castle is also famous for its 500 kinds of wildflowers, especially the Ezo mountain azalea that blooms in early summer.
