Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples

Japan's only museum dedicated to the culture of northern peoples

This is the only museum in Japan that introduces the culture of the peoples inhabiting northern regions of the globe, including Ainu, Inuit and Oroks. In the exhibition rooms, you can see materials that show the wisdom and skills of these peoples, the rituals and spiritual culture of each ethnic group, and valuable materials such as pottery from the Okhotsk culture, which flourished along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk from the 5th to 13th centuries. Audio guides in five languages (Japanese, English, Korean, Chinese, and Thai) are available for rent free of charge. In the lobby, you can try on Ainu and Mongolian traditional costumes, touch reindeer and seal fur, and experience musical instruments.
