Sounkyo Onsen Icefall Festival

An event where you can experience the fantastic beauty created by ice and lights

The "Sounkyo Onsen Hyobaku Matsuri (Ice Fall Festival)" held in January every year is known as one of the best winter events in Hokkaido. About 30 ice sculptures of various sizes line the 10,000 square meter site on the banks of the Ishikari River, and the highlights include a 13-meter observation deck, a slide, and an ice fall shrine. It takes about three months to create the ice sculptures using the nature of the deep canyons at the foot of the Daisetsu Mountains. The ice sculptures are lit up with seven different colors of light, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The fireworks beautifully illuminate the frigid night sky, enveloping the entire venue in a romantic mood.
