Places to go Wakkanai, Rishiri, Rebun (Wakkanai Airport)

Witness a unique and outstanding view at the most far-flung paradise in Japan

Wakkanai is the northernmost point in Japan and is a port town facing the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. Blessed with abundant seafood, dishes using local marine products are popular, among them the "takoshabu" specialty, where sliced octopus is skimmed through hot water before eating. The vast Sarobetsu Plain and the Soya Hill, formed in the Ice Age, are among the stunning natural vistas on offer here. In addition, you will find Cape Soya, at Japan's northernmost point; Cape Noshappu, with exquisite sunsets; and the stunning remains of the Kita Bohatei Dome. Two areas that are gaining ground among outdoorsy types are a pair of islands accessible by ferry from Wakkanai. At the center of Rishiri Island is Mount Rishiri, colloquially called "Rishiri Fuji" for its beautiful resemblance to Mt. Fuji, with mysterious swamps and unusually-shaped rocks dotting the scenic island. In summer, there are 300 kinds of alpine plants that grow in Rebun Island, which is nicknamed the "Floating Island of Flowers", and you can enjoy the spectacular view from this remote island through a variety of trekking routes.
