Sapporo The retro shopping district Tanuki Koji has never been more fun!

The Tanuki Koji shopping district is located in the heart of Sapporo and stretches for about 900 meters to the northwest. It is one of the oldest shopping districts in Hokkaido, boasting almost 150 years of history. The arcade and Suzuranto lights installed in the 1950s still stand there today, giving the area a truly retro feel. Stores hidden under the awning include a variety of 200 shops, whether old family shops or unique, new shops. With both the old and new to be found everywhere, anyone can enjoy themselves! Here, we’ll show you the incredible transformation of Tanuki Koji that changes along with the town of Sapporo.

SOUP CURRY GARAKU

Anyone’s mouth would water at the thought of eating incredible soup curry in a place like this.

Soup curry is a dish that originated in Sapporo and that the city is known for. Some might say Tanuki Koji is a battleground for soup curry shops. SOUP CURRY GARAKU found in 2-chome of Tanuki Koji is a popular restaurant that almost always has long lines to get in. They use a secret arrangement of spices and Japanese-style stock to give their curry a deep, umami flavor. Their most popular dish is the "Soft Drumstick and Vegetable” soup curry. They have a monthly menu as well, and the soup curry made by their world-experienced chefs is good enough to make the whole strip scream! The rustic, lumber interior will give you that comfortable, at-home feel as well.

Sapporo Gyoza Seizosho, Tanuki Koji Branch

A gyoza restaurant located at 5-chome of Tanuki Koji. Specialist chefs use local Hokkaido produce to make every aspect of this gyoza. We recommend the “Otsubu Gyoza,” a full, nearly bursting gyoza is filled with delicious, juicy meat that dribbles out when you bite in with a chewy, enjoyable texture. Their other snacks and sides are quite reasonably priced, so it’s the perfect place to go to end the night with gyoza. Domin Soul Food Zangi is also said to be quite delicious!
