Sapporo Where to go? Spots in Sapporo with amazing night views

Like Hakodate and Otaru, Sapporo is one of Japan’s most famous spots for its night views. In 2018, it was nominated as one of the New Three Major Night Views of Japan. The city of Sapporo is dotted with many glittering lights, which can be enjoyed from various observation spots. The diverse range of night views offered by the sprawling city of Sapporo includes the office buildings in its city center, its illuminations, neon lights, and light-ups! Let’s take a look at some of the best night view spots in Sapporo.

JR Tower Observation Deck T38

“JR Tower Observation Deck T38” is located on the 38th floor of a commercial facility that is directly connected to JR Sapporo Station. This deck offers a 360-degree panoramic night view of Sapporo from a height of 160 meters above ground level. While you can enjoy a variety of night views depending on the direction in which you look, this spot is unique for allowing you to enjoy the night view of central Sapporo up close. We especially recommend the view from the south side of the tower, which offers a panoramic view of Sapporo’s office district and the neon-lit Susukino entertainment district. Don’t forget to check out the “Observation Restroom” in the north corner while you are there. This men’s restroom has been built with glass walls that allow you to look out at the city of Sapporo while admiring its remarkably open design.

Sapporo TV Tower

The Sapporo TV Tower is a landmark of Sapporo City, and its observation deck located 90 meters above ground level allows you to enjoy the iconic night view of Odori Park, a place that strikes the perfect balance between urban life and nature. The observation windows have transparent glass panels that slope down all the way to your feet, making these windows of terror an absolutely thrilling experience! On winter nights, you can enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival, a traditional winter fixture of Sapporo, and the Sapporo White Illumination at the same time. The Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium is also visible beyond Odori Park, and depending on the time of your visit, you may get to see a special night view featuring the illuminated stadium. A special private booking option is also available for those who wish to visit the observatory after hours, which is highly recommended for anniversaries and surprises!

Mt. Moiwa Summit Observation Deck

Mt. Moiwa is one of the most popular night view spots in Japan. You can reach the summit of Mt. Moiwa by taking the ropeway and cable car from the foot of the mountain. The night view from an altitude of 531 meters is incredible, and you will not forget the beautiful panoramic view that extends as far as you can see with lights that resemble sparkling jewels. There is also a “Bell of Happiness” at the observation deck, and couples can lock a “love padlock” to the handrail around it. It is believed that couples who write their names on the padlock will lead a happy life together. There is also a restaurant at the Summit Station, the highest point in Sapporo City, where you can enjoy dinner while looking down at the surrounding night view. This is a night view spot that couples must not miss.

Okurayama Lookout

The Okurayama Lookout is a ski jumping platform that has been used for many competitions, including the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. The starting point of the ski jumping platform, which is 307 meters above ground level, has been designed to look like the athlete is leaping towards the city of Sapporo. The Okurayama Lookout, which is located directly above it, has the ultimate position for amazing night views. A major feature of this spot is the panoramic view of light it offers from the perspective of the athletes, as the illuminated Odori Park in front of them resembles an airport runway. One of the most enjoyable experiences here is taking the two-person lift that athletes also use to get to the lookout.

nORBESA

nORBESA is a commercial facility located in Susukino that stands out with its large Ferris wheel. This facility has everything from restaurants, amusement facilities, to anime shops. Riding this Ferris wheel on the roof of the seven-story building allows you to enjoy the night views of Sapporo as the wheel brings you 78 meters above ground level, with each rotation taking around 10 minutes. Your field of view will widen as you are lifted off the ground, offering you different views at different hours of the day and making the ride an endlessly fun experience. This “stroll in the night sky” experience is quite different from simply enjoying static night views from the top of a mountain or tower. Heaters have been installed in the gondolas to make sure visitors can stay warm even in the middle of winter. Watching snow fall lightly on the city of Sapporo from inside the gondola is also a fascinating sight.
