Places to go Asahikawa, Sounkyo Gorge, Kamikawa (Asahikawa Airport)

Explore northern Hokkaido and the vast Daisetsuzan mountain range!

Asahikawa is the economic and cultural center of the northern Hokkaido area. This town is second in size only to Sapporo, but boasts a magnificent harmony with nature. Asahiyama Zoo is a must-see destination, and don't miss the local Asahikawa ramen! Asahikawa also gives you great access to popular destinations like Biei and Furano. To the east of the Kamikawa Basin is Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest national park in Japan, the main attraction of which is the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range. The mountain views here are often called the "eaves of Hokkaido" for their signature look, and are where you can experience the finest fall foliage in all of Japan. The view that awaits you during the peak foliage season is simply exquisite. At the foothills you will find the steep cliff precipices of the Sounkyo Gorge, among other breathtaking vistas year round.
