A 4-day itinerary full of spectacular, photo-worthy vistas Arrive at Memanbetsu Airport and depart from Wakkanai Airport

DAY 1

After landing at Memanbetsu Airport in Ozora Town, take a rental car to Lake Notoro, which sits near the Sea of Okhotsk. Great waves of coral grass grow here, and their autumn colors are a sight to behold. After enjoying this autumn-only scenery, have lunch at the Ryuhyo-Kaido Abashiri Roadside Station located in Abashiri City. Then get back to your car to check in at Lake Saroma Tsuruga Resort, your lodging location for the first night. The resort sits on the shore of Lake Saroma, a famous sunset spot. It has several on-site sunset viewing spots and offers guidance for when to watch it. After dropping off your luggage, confirm the best time and place to catch the sunset of the day. Until the time comes, go out for a stroll around the Wakka Primeval Flower Garden.

DAY 2

On the second day, drive alongside Lake Saroma before proceeding inland. Stop by the local roadside station on the way to Cape Sango, which sits between Lake Saroma and Tsurunuma. The cape is well-known for its coral grass, also known as common glasswort. The small suspension bridge that connects the parking lot to the area where coral grass grows en masse is quietly gaining popularity on social media. After leaving Lake Saroma, head to the town of Engaru to reach the Yamabiko Falls, part of the Shirataki Geopark. The splashing waters of the falls are pair wonderfully with the beautiful autumn foliage. Located in the Shirataki district, the Shirataki Geopark is Japan's largest obsidian-mining area, and there are plenty of attractions where you can feel the activities of the Earth. Visit the Shirataki Geopark Visitor Center to learn about the area's geological origins. Then, spend the night around a campfire enjoying Shibetsu's specialty Suffolk lamb and chatting to the backdrop of a star-filled sky.
