As temperatures in Hokkaido vary from region to region, it is important to choose the right clothing for your destination. Here are some recommendations for clothing and useful items for each season, based on the temperature data collected around Hokkaido’s major airports.

Spring Clothing
In April, signs of spring gradually begin to appear, but the average temperature does not reach 10°C, about the same as in December in Tokyo. Coats are still necessary. Puddles from melting snow are common, so waterproof shoes are recommended. In May, spring-like weather continues, and with cherry blossoms and lilacs blooming one after another in Odori Park. At Hokkaido Shrine, you can enjoy the combined beauty of cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. Although it can be warm and sunny during the day, the average temperature is still around 14°C. There are also days when the temperature drops below 10°C due to a return of cold weather, so coats and jackets are still needed.

Summer Clothing
The average temperature in June is 17°C, showing a rising trend. With low humidity and no rainy season, the climate is refreshing, and the number of days comfortable in short sleeves during the daytime increases. In July and August, the average temperature exceeds 20°C, with midsummer days reaching 30°C or higher. The arrival of Sapporo Summer Festival further enhances the summer mood. Daytime city sightseeing can be done in typical summer attire like short sleeves and shorts. UV protection is also essential. It can be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so having a light cardigan or hoodie is recommended. Usually, after Obon in late August, the temperature begins to drop, signaling the arrival of autumn, but in recent years the lingering heat has been intense.

Autumn Clothing
There is a significant seasonal shift from summer to autumn and early winter. Early September can still be sweaty, with days when you can wear short sleeves during the day. From mid-September, temperatures start to drop, so dressing in layers is advisable. Don't forget rain gear, as rain is more likely. In October, with an average temperature of 12°C, chilly days continue, and the temperature difference between day and night increases. Mid-October sees the beginning of autumn foliage, and the ginkgo trees at Hokkaido University glow golden. Late October may bring the first snow, and warm clothes like thick coats are recommended. From around November, the cold intensifies, so better prepare winter gear like down jackets and gloves. As snow and sleet are common, boots are recommended for footwear.

Winter Clothing
From around December, snowfall begins to increase, allowing for a white Sapporo experience during the winter months. In February, you can enjoy the famous Sapporo Snow Festival. Prepare thoroughly for the cold and snow with thermal innerwear, thick long coats, down jackets, and gloves. However, indoors are usually well-heated, so easily removable items are convenient. From the New Year, the midwinter period begins, with average temperatures below freezing and severe cold weather. Snow falls almost daily, and roads often freeze, making snow boots or shoes with non-slip soles a must. Bringing sunscreen to prevent sunburn caused by the reflection of sunlight off the snow is also a good idea.
