Former Nippon Yusen Kaisha Otaru Branch
A stone building built over 100 years ago in the late Meiji period
This early modern European Renaissance-style building was erected in 1906, just after the Russo-Japanese War. It was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1969 as a representative stone building of the late Meiji era, which left us many excellent architectural works. This is the place where the famous Japan-Russia Border Demarcation Meeting was held. The interior of the building has been restored to the way it was when it was built, and the decorations are magnificent. Located near the North Canal and Canal Park, it is a first-class site, well worth a visit.
