Noshappu Aquarium
Meet seals, penguins, and balloon lumpfish at Japan's northernmost aquarium!
This is the northernmost aquarium in Japan, located at Cape Noshappu in Wakkanai. As soon as you enter, you will be greeted by energetic spotted seals, and in the penguin pond you can see cute Humboldt penguins. Popular for their unique round shape, the balloon lumpfish are also something you can't miss when visiting here. The circular aquarium on the first floor mainly exhibits fishes that live in the cold currents of the Sea of Okhotsk and the northern part of the Sea of Japan, such as hokke (Okhotsk atka mackerel) and the “phantom fish” ito (stringfish,). On the second floor, there is a display of cliones, also known as "angels of the drift ice.”
