Irie and Takasago Shell Mound Park
See reconstructed Jomon period pit dwellings and actual shell mounds, and be reminded of the romance of antiquity!
The Jomon people, who lived here about 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, left behind shell middens as thick as 3 meters. Jomon pottery, fishhooks and other tools, as well as the bones of animals they ate, have been found in the mounds, providing clues to how people lived in those days. In addition to seeing the actual shell middens, visitors can also see a partially reconstructed pit dwelling site. The Irie Takasago Shell Midden Museum displays a variety of accessories made from animal tusks and shells, all of which are worth seeing for their historical value.
