Biratori Lily Bell Fields
The largest wild lily garden in Japan, where you can be enveloped in the fragrance of the pretty flowers.
The lily of the valley is characterized by small, dainty white flowers and large leaves. In Memu, at the foot of Mt. Poroshiri in Biratori Town, there is a large colony of wild lily of the valley that heralds the arrival of summer in Hokkaido. With an area of about 15 hectares, it is the largest in Japan. In contrast to the modest appearance of the flowers, the scent is very fragrant and rich. In the language of flowers, lily of the valley is said to represent happiness, and indeed you can't help but feeling happy when you are surrounded by the fragrance that spreads all around. The fields are open to the public for about a month from late May to mid-June every year. The best time to see the lily of the valley is during the Suzuran Kansho-kai, an event usually held in June.
