Former British Consulate of Hakodate

A Western-style building with the Union Jack fluttering in the air, facing Motoizaka. The rose garden is magnificent.

On the hillside of Motoizaka, overlooking Hakodate Port, is a building that served as the British Consulate from the opening of Japan to the early Showa period. The exterior of the building is a blend of Japanese and Western styles, with fireplace chimneys rising over kawara tiles, while the interior is all European. You will feel as if you have gone back in time to the Meiji era! There is also a store called Queen's Memory that sells imported goods, and a café where you can enjoy authentic British tea and traditional afternoon tea sets, and take a break while looking at the rose garden.
