Kiusu Earthwork Burial Circle
One of the Largest Jomon Period Grave Groups Unique to Hokkaido
”Shuteibo (Earthwork burial circles)” is the name given to a community cemetery unique to Hokkaido, built in the late Jomon period, where the ground was dug into a circular shape and surrounded by a ring of earth. There are only a handful of such tombs scattered throughout Hokkaido, and one of them, the Kius Tomb Group, is one of the largest of its kind in the Jomon period. Of the eight that are known to exist, the first, with an outer diameter of 83 meters, is almost completely intact.
