Onneyu Onsen is divided into three areas: the Onneyu Onsen area, the Takinoyu area, and the Rubeishibe ponyu area. The simple sulfur spring in the Onneyu Onsen area is famous for its whitening properties. Located along the national highway that connects Kitami and So-unkyo Onsen, Onneyu, which means "big hot water" in Ainu, was first opened in 1899 and is a hot spring resort with abundant hot spring water. From early to mid-May, 280,000 naturally occurring azaleas bloom at Azalea Mountain, and the Onneyu Onsen Azalea Park, where visitors are allowed to enter only when the azaleas are in bloom, is filled with purple flowers, making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing.
