Lake Akan Onsen

Lake Akan Onsen is a treasure trove of attractions that will satisfy your intellectual curiosity about Ainu culture.

There is a long history of Ainu people using the hot springs when a research team visited Lake Akan in 1858 to study and explore the Ezo region. On the shore of Lake Akan is the largest Ainu kotan in Hokkaido, where you can see the Ainu traditional dance, which is designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset. Most of the lodging facilities have open-air baths where you can relax and warm up. It is not uncommon to encounter Ezo deer and foxes while driving in the magnificent nature.
