Shikaribetsu-ko Kotan
An ice village that appears on a frozen lake for just 60 days
Lake Shikaribetsu, located at an elevation of 810 meters, is the highest lake in Hokkaido. Nestled within Daisetsuzan National Park and surrounded by untouched forest, its crystal-clear waters rank among the most transparent in Japan. The event held at Lake Shikaribetsu as a winter tradition is “Shikaribetsuko Kotan.” During the severe winter season, dome-shaped structures called “igloos,” built by stacking blocks of ice, line up on the completely frozen lake, recreating the scene of a traditional Ainu village known as a “kotan.” Within the venue, facilities such as an open-air bath on ice filled with hot spring water from Lake Shikaribetsu and an ice chapel where actual weddings can be held are set up. In addition, a variety of activities are available to fully enjoy the nature of Lake Shikaribetsu, including snowmobiling and guided walks through the deep snow-covered forest. Among them, the ice bar is the highlight. Not only the building itself but also the counters, tables, and even the glasses for drinks are made from the pure white snow and highly transparent ice that accumulate on the lake. Inside the ice bar is a fantastical world of transparency and icy blue. The cocktails served there are sure to be especially memorable. However, “Shikaribetsuko Kotan” is a limited-time event. It is a phantom village that completely melts away by spring. Enjoy the unique winter experience of Lake Shikaribetsu to the fullest during the event period! When visiting, be sure to dress warmly and don’t forget snow boots for walking on the slippery surface of the lake.
