Shikaribetsu-ko Kotan

An ice village that appears on a frozen lake for just 60 days

Lake Shikaribetsu stands at 800 meters above sea level, as the lake with the highest altitude in all of Hokkaido. It is situated in the virgin forests of Daisetsuzan National Park and boasts one of the best clear waters in Japan. Here, an event called the Shikaribetsu-ko Kotan is held as one of the area's winter traditions. During the harsh winters, rows of igloos are created and bring back the historic sceneries of the Ainu settlements. An open-air bath on ice fed by the lake's spring water, snowmobile rides, and guided treks through the deep snowy forest with a guide are among the activities available to appreciate the beauty of Lake Shikaribetsu. The location also has an Ice Chapel where you may have a wedding ceremony right in the middle of the village. But out of all ice-made structures, the ice bar has to be the greatest of what the village has to offer. Every aspect of this construction, including the counter, tables, and even the cups used to enjoy a drink, is formed of transparent ice and pure white snow that has fallen on the lake. A clear blue fantasy world awaits you inside the ice bar, where you may sample the wonderful beverages. Shikaribetsu-ko Kotan, on the other hand, is only available for a limited period. It's a phantom village that will vanish by springtime, so enjoy it while you can! When visiting, remember to dress warmly and wear snow boots to avoid slipping on the slick lake surface.
