SHINRA

Let's go to the cold sea! Let's explore on the drift ice!

At SHINRA in Shiretoko Shari, you can take a "Drift Ice Walk" to explore the sea of drift ice. Put on a special dry suit with shoes over your clothes, and you're ready to go to the Sea of Okhotsk, where drift ice floats. You can walk on the drift ice that fills the sea, take a break on the ice, or jump into the ice where you can see the surface of the sea. Shiretoko is a wintering ground for white-tailed sea eagles and Steller's sea eagles, both of which are designated as endangered species by the Japanese government, so the encounter rate during the drift ice walk is almost 100%! From early February to late March every year, elementary school students over 130cm tall can experience this unique winter treat on the Sea of Okhotsk.
