Places to go Shiretoko (Memanbetsu Airport)

A global tourist destination acclaimed for the dynamism of nature on offer

The Shiretoko Peninsula extends to the east of Hokkaido. The wealth of sea and land species inhabiting the area and the persistent ecosystem led to it being inscribed in 2005 as a World Heritage Site. You can stroll through the woods and observe the sea from the deck of a cruise ship. In late January each year, drift ice flows from the seas in Siberia, and on the western side of the peninsula, the Sea of Okhotsk forms a white expanse for a limited time. Drift ice "cruises" let you see the drift ice up close while on board a boat, while "drift ice walks" involve striding atop their hardened surface. These and other activities around drift ice are available to the adventurous tourist. Many people come to visit Utoro Hot Springs in Shari, which is along the Sea of Okhotsk. You will also find delicious seafood like crab, salmon, and salmon roe.
