Places to go Otaru, Yoichi, Kiroro (New Chitose Airport)
Take a stroll through the nostalgic cityscape
Otaru is a port town that has flourished since the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) eras, and is full of exotic and retro charm. The historic cityscape, with its gas-lit canals, brick warehouses, and stone-facade banks, is perfect for a stroll. There are plenty of attractions with a signature aesthetic, such as cafes serving local delicacies and adorned with charming oil lamps, and specialty shops and workshops where you can experience the world of music boxes and glass crafts. Located at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula, Yoichi is home to a whisky distillery featured in a televised drama series, as well as wineries. Moreover, the Kiroro area, located in southern Otaru, has been a popular resort destination in recent years.
